Excellent news for footpaths
28 April 2010

The pathways at Ben Lomond, Glencoe, Torridon and many of the National Trust for Scotland’s mountains will benefit from vital repair and maintenance work thanks to chocolate Easter Eggs.

Cadbury have donated £10,000 to support the conservation charity’s work to repair its upland footpaths, helping fund the work of both its dedicated in-house maintenance team and a four-year path conservation project called Mountains for People.

The chocolate manufacturer and the National Trust for Scotland have been working together since 2008 to put on Easter egg trails for families all across Scotland.

Last year, more than 10,000 people took part in the trail at Pollok House in Glasgow. This year, 35 trails took place over the Easter weekend, at locations from Inverewe Garden in the north, to Threave Garden in the south.

Glencoe – one of the Trust properties that will benefit from the extra cash – also hosted an event. Property Manager Scott McCombie said:

“This contribution will make a real difference to the vital conservation work that’s required to keep our mountain path network up to standard. We are very grateful to Cadbury for playing their part in protecting our delicate alpine environments from the effects of erosion.”

The National Trust for Scotland’ has a dedicated upland footpath team who care for more than 394 miles of mountain paths at the Trust’s mountain properties all over Scotland. Annually, it costs approximately £80,000 to fund the specialist, ongoing repair work needed to protect this fragile environment.

Anyone interested in supporting this work can make a donation at www.nts.org.uk/soletrading.

New Photographic Exhibition starts on Monday! Joe MacRae and Jan Hamilton share the exhibition space to display their fantastic work.
30 June 2009

Starting on Monday 6th July the new photographic exhibtition will be available to view at the Glencoe Visitor Centre. This month two photographers will share the space; Jan Hamilton and Joe MacRae.

The exhibition will be open most days throughout July during normal visitor centre opening hours (7 days 9:30-17:30)

A little about each of the photographers:

Jan Hamilton's art is influenced by her training as a mathematician and inspired by her sister's patchwork and applique. Using the computer she creates collages of her numerous photo's to interpret the details and landscapes of Argyll. Her tree portraits are a solution to the problem of capturing on camera the magic of standing under a tree and looking up at the pattern of branches and leaves against the light.

Joe MacRae studied photography for 4 years at Stevenson College, Edinburgh where he won the D&AD (Design and Art Direction) 1st Prize for Photography. Joe has now returned to the highlands and is influenced on a day-to-day basis by the unpredictable weather and breathtaking scenery of his homeland Scotland. Whilst living here he is adding to his photographic repertoire and regularly exhibiting his expanding portfolio of work.

British Trust for Ornithology to hold training day at Glencoe in May.
16 March 2009

When you are in the hills, does seeing a ptarmigan or hearing a raven add to the enjoyment of your day? You may be interested in a bird survey training course aimed at hillwalkers and other outdoor enthusiasts, which is being run by the British Trust for Ornithology in collaboration with the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club. The course will cover some bird identification and show how everybody can contribute to conservation by taking part in the Bird Atlas 2007-11. Receiving your bird sightings from the uplands is crucial to the success of this important project.

The course is taking place at the NTS Glencoe Visitor Centre on Saturday 9th May 2009 and will include a chance to get outside and hopefully see some birds. It is free to anyone that would like to contribute to bird surveys. If you are interested contact Robin Anderson at BTO Scotland: robin.anderson@bto.org or 01786 466560. This course is being run as part of the Building Bird Monitoring in Scotland project funded by SNH, The Gillman Trusts, BTO and SOC.

New Photographic Exhibition
06 October 2008

October brings us a new Photographic Exhibition in Glencoe. This month we are hosting Alex Boyd's new exhibtion 'Sonnets from Scotland'.

Alex Boyd's new series 'Sonnets from Scotland' is a photographic journey throughout the landscapes of Scotland, showing recognisable locations such as Skye and Glencoe re-interpreted.

The series attempts to question the depiction of Scottish landscapes and our relationships to them, by introducing a human element into these images. Boyd presents Scotland reduced to a series of cinematic set pieces, questioning a traditional collective Scottish longing for an idealised picturesque representation of the landscape. In depicting these romanticised settings with the addition of a lone figure, Boyd's work recalls that of 19th century Northern European painters such as Caspar David Friedrich and John Knox. The exhibition is also influenced by Scottish photographers such as Hamish Macmillan Brown, who depicted Scotland in the style of the sublime using nature to create vast dramatic spaces often dominated by natural features, reflecting 18th century attitudes to the wilderness.

The exhibition will be available to view most days throughout October and Novemeber at the Glencoe Visitor Centre. Entry is Free.

Barn Owl Ringing in Glencoe.
26 June 2008

On Wednesday night (25th June) an exciting event took place in Glencoe. As noted in our ranger diary we have barn owls breeding on the property; and this week our property manager Doug Mainland, who has a license to ring, drafted the help of the rangers to help him ring the chicks that were born earlier this year. We found two chicks in the nest, and ringed them both. Ringing is essential if we are to learn about how long they live and when and where they move, questions that are vital for bird conservation. It also means that the property is informed if the bird is found elsewhere later in its life or after its death, helping us to learn more about the birds born on the property.

We'll upload some pictures of the action in the ranger's diary!

Little Egret seen at Invercoe
15 November 2007

A Little Egret has been seen on the shore at Invercoe since the 25th of Sept. 2007. This species has been expanding it's breeding range over the last few years, originally breeding in southern Europe it now regularly breeds in southern England and Ireland.

Unfortunately it has now gone, it was last seen on the 7th and was not there during the November WeBS count on the 11th, we've been checking all week but there is no sign. Hopefully it has flown off to wrmer climes rather than one of the local foxes or mink making ameal of it

See the photo on our Ranger Diary page

24 September 2007

Glencoe's Latest Big Attraction!!
06 June 2007

The biggest attraction for visitors to Glencoe this month has been the growing number of fluffy Highland calves, proudly being displayed by their mothers in the field next to Glencoe Visitor Centre. The viewing platform, which has one of the most stunning panoramic views in the world looking up the Glen, is also the perfect place to see the new arrivals, the newest of which is Donnie, who was born on Tuesday. A decision was made this year to name the calves after staff and Donnie joins Abi, Scott and Douglas. Donnie Mckinnon, who has been naming the calves is expecting quite a few more members of staff to have namesakes by the end of the calving. At present bulls are outnumbering heifers by 3 to 1 but all that might change as more of the spectacularly horned highlanders give birth.

07 August 2009

HF Holidays whose walkers regularly enjoy the hills around Glencoe have left more than footprints this summer.

The company has donated £2000 to the Sole Trading Appeal. This project maintains the Trust's upland footpaths in some of Scotland's most spectacular and remote mountain ranges.

Glencoe property manager, Scott McCombie said, " we are very grateful to HF Holidays and their Pathways fund. It's great to have people putting something back into the hills that give visitors so much enjoyment."

HF Holidays has a base in North Ballachulish from which it organises many walks in the Glencoe area. The Scottish schools are now back and our events programme (all 296 of them!) is winding down.  As always the Land Rover Safaris have been a sell out, thanks largely to our Project Scotland Volunteers Rachel Lowe and Lindsay Buchanan who showed no fear in getting dressed up as characters out of Harry Potter or staying up late for the dusk Wildlife Safaris (it seemed like a good idea in winter to hold dusk safaris, but during July when dusk was 11pm, it seemed less so!!).  Our Massacre Safari has been popular too, particularly with American MacDonalds chasing their roots.

New events for this year included a Goblin and Faerie Foray  which involved aspects of natural history, art, creative writing and storytelling; a digital photography workshop (including a digital darkroom session).  Another popular addition to the events programme was “ Borrow the Ranger Rucksack”, where kids could hire the bag full of activities and complete on their own, so we always had events to offer even when we were busy.

Highland heifer heads for the hills
13 July 2006

A strange incident at Glencoe saw one of our highland cows jump the fence and make a break for freedom. Donnie, Glencoe’s handyman, tracked down the offending beast, who had run along the A82 and made her way from near the Visitor Centre to the Buachaille. Here she was lured back to the quad with some hay and a scratch behind her ear. Then, avoiding the temptation to lasoo the naughty animal and be dragged off into the hills, Donnie retreated to scratch his head for a solution to get her home, only to find her back home the next day, none the worse for her adventures. It seems freedom didn’t live up to her expectations! (Taken from NTS main page)

Is Glencoe one of the Seven Wonders of Scotland?
02 March 2006
To help celebrate and promote the The National Trust for Scotland's 75th anniversary, the Trust has teamed up with The Scotsman to search for the 'Seven Wonders of Scotland' -  the seven things that stir the emotions of people in Scotland the most and what makes them feel proud of their nation.

With 30 potential wonders being endorsed by high-profile figures over the next 8 weeks in The Scotsman, a public vote will decide on the final seven, which will feature in a special 'Wonder of Scotland' magazine to be published by The Scotsman on 8 April.

Over 20,000 votes have been cast so far and a great debate has begun as to what is truly great about Scotland. Is it the iconic places like St Kilda, Staffa and Glencoe? Is it a cultural wonder such as Scotland’s world famous literature? Perhaps it is one of the great Scottish exports, such as whisky.

Glencoe is in the running to be declared as one of the Seven Wonders of Scotland.

Have you voted yet?

Voting ends on 21 March so hurry and vote for Glencoe!! www.scotsman.com/7wonders
