Wild Land and Unna

The Trust acquired Glencoe at the height of the Depression in the 1930s.  How did this come about? 

A major part of the property, Dalness, including Buachaille Etive Mor and Buachaille Etive Beag, was purchased following an appeal to members of mountaineering clubs across Great Britain. 

This appeal was led by, and in truth largely funded by, Percy Unna, then President of the Scottish Mountaineering Club.

In handing over the mountains to the care of the Trust, the donors stated that there should be unrestricted access at all times and that the land be maintained in its primitive condition for all time. 

Based on his wide experience of the “taming” of mountains across Europe, for instance through the construction of cable-cars, funicular railways, mountain-top restaurants and the like, Unna recognised the value of Scotland’s undeveloped mountains.

You will also find challenge, unchanging landscapes, wildlife and enjoyment.
